During the June 2022 break, students earned clinal credit in community health and pediatrics while serving in mobile clinics in and around Pucallpa, Peru. Most of these communities have not had access to affordable healthcare since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. It was also one of the hardest hit areas for Covid-19 death in Peru.
Under the guidance of Professor Dr. Haskell, four local Peruvian doctors and other volunteers with International Medical Relief the students were able to utilize their nursing skills by performing health screenings, vitals and assessments, medication administration, and cultural communication with the help of local medical interpreters and our local host in Peru.
Students were immersed in the language, culture, and needs of the communities. They saw hundreds of patients throughout the week from newborn to elderly with a huge array of needs including primary care and urgent care needs.
